In season now
What to plant, what to feed the birds and what's new on our shelves this time of year in Kansas City. We update it every season, so check back often.
In Season Now
What to plant now: October to December
- Seed garlic. October is the best time to plant garlic in Kansas City, so the cloves can root before the ground freezes. Plant cloves 1 to 2 inches deep and about 6 inches apart, then mulch after a few hard frosts. Running late? Get it in the ground as soon as you can.
- Spring flower bulbs. Tulips, daffodils and other spring bulbs go in now, any time before the ground freezes, for color next spring.
- Feed the lawn. A November fertilizer application helps cool-season lawns store energy for winter and green up faster in spring.
- Cover empty garden beds. Cereal rye planted in the fall protects bare soil over winter and adds organic matter when you turn it under in spring.
- Feed the birds. Suet and black oil sunflower seed give winter birds the energy they need when natural food runs low.
